In the smugglers' tracks

Would you like to explore the smugglers' world in a wonderful landscape? The two-day mountain hike around the Madrisa leads you on an exciting journey of discovery on both sides of the Swiss-Austrian border.

In the smugglers' tracks

Already centuries ago, a lively trade existed between Montafon and Prättigau. The state border between Switzerland and Austria made the trading activities illegal though. Thus, essential goods were smuggled over the mountain passes between the valleys. Today, the paths across the border are freely accessible and offer unique nature experiences and exciting stories.

Route

The smugglers' experience Rätikon can be started from both Gargellen and Klosters. Either way, the route proceeds counter-clockwise.

How it works

At the starting point at the Schafbergbahn Gargellen or the Madrisa-Bahn in Klosters, you will receive a GPS device and all necessary information about the smugglers' tour. This also includes the coordinates of the first depot.

Meals and accommodation

The dormitories are located in the immediate vicinity of the mountain stations. The Madrisa-Land provides 11 sleeping places in the hay and 10 sleeping places in a tepee tent. At an extra charge, it is also possible to spend the night in one of the four tree houses, which can accommodate two to six smugglers depending on their size.
